LINEE DI RICERCA

Study and characterization of plant defenses in response to the application of electrolyzed water: electrochemically activated water is obtained through the electrolysis of saline solutions (potassium chloride) and it contains hypochlorous acid and other oxidazing agents. This solution has a strong biocidal activity against bacteria and fungi, even if it is not toxic to the environment or animals. Plants infected with pathogens, if treated with activated water, show  regression of the symptoms. Molecular analysis has shown that this activated water can also activate plant endogenous defenses, therefore it can act against pathogens from the inside as well as from the outside of the plant.

DNA and histone methylation mechanisms in plants. - Structural and functional characterization of methylated DNA binding proteins in Arabidopsis thaliana and their role in gene expression and regulation. - Study of MBD interacting partners in A. thaliana cells, - Protein arginine methylation and PRMTs in plants: role in histone and non histone proteins regulation. - Epigenetic regulation during tomato fruit development.

Physiological and biochemical characterization of amino acid metabolism in prokaryotes and higher plants. - Attainment of increased tolerance of crop species to drought and salinity through engineering of proline synthesis and catabolism - Characterization of selected aspects of aromatic metabolism during the response to biotic stress conditions and their use as a tool to select plant varieties with increased resistance to fungal pathogens - Identification of new inhibitors endowed with low environmental impact to be used in weed control.

Biochemical and molecular analysis of enzyme systems involved in oxygen radical production; analysis of antioxidant molecules activity in biological systems. - Analysis of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and in nasal fluid of patients with rhinovirus HRV16 rhinitis. - ROS and DNA fragment production in human corneal tissue vaporized by excimer laser treatment during photorefractive cheratectomy. - Interactions between non-caspase, ROS-dependent way to apoptosis in human mitochondria and antioxidants. - Role of ROS in human maternally inherited mitochondrial diseases, such as Leber’s optical neuropathy (LHON). - Karyotype and genome analyses, gonad and pituitary differentiation in Acipenseridae (sturgeons). - Antioxidant activity of palm oil and other products (cocoa, olive oil) from certified biological farms.
