LINEE DI RICERCA

- Biochemical and molecular characterization of pectic enzymes, proteinases and xylanase secreted by fungal plant pathogens during pathogenesis. Their role is determined by gene disruption experiments. Plant inhibitors able to reduce the activity of these enzymes are characterized and overexpressed in plant to increase resistance to diseases. These enzymes could also increase clarity of beverages and juices in place of physico-chemical treatment. Selected enzymes are expressed in heterologous systems for massive production.
- Induction of resistance to plant diseases by elicitors. Defence signalling pathways, expression and durability of defence responses, effectiveness against different pathogens are studied. Trials are performed to compare plant protection obtained with elicitors with that obtained with chemicals.
- Application of proteomics technologies to environmental and agricultural research. Proteomics is aimed at describing the patterns in which proteins are expressed in various states of growth, development, health, stress, disease, or technological manipulations. Proteomic tools are currently being used to study: 1) the allergenic potential of plant food; 2) protein expression in root plasma membrane after stimulation by humic substances; 3) changes in the grape berry proteome in postharvesting; 4) the plant-soil-microbe interaction
