LINEE DI RICERCA

The main topic of the laboratory is the investigation of the molecular mechanisms regulating fleshy fruit development and ripening. We are undertaking two different approaches using both genomics and single genes methods. We are using both peach and strawberry as model species of the Rosaceae family, and tomato as both a recipient of transgenes and as a model for fleshy fruit ripening. We have developed the first peach microarray which contains more than 4800 different probes. We are using this tool to undermine gene expression changes occurring throughout fruit development and ripening, in response to hormonal treatments, different agronomic practices and among different cultivars. The results obtained with the microarray experiments and the ones from digital analyses of gene expression using EST collections have been, and are going to be, used to identify candidate genes involved in the regulation of fruit formation, development and ripening. Selected genes of both peach and strawberry are going to be functionally analysed by means of transient and stable transformation of peach (only transient!), strawberry and tomato plants. Also arabidopsis and tobacco plant have been (and are going to be) transformed with peach and strawberry genes to characterize their function as these species could be a useful resource to investigate fleshy fruit ripening even though they develop dry fruits. Transcription factors encoding genes are among those on which we are going to focus our main attentions and interest.
